Come join me (and others, this might include you) at my home tomorrow night and every Wednesday until I go to New York City in July.
personbypersonresearch:
The Center for Person by Person Research would like to invite you to join us every Wednesday from 8pm to Midnight for The Esoteric Hours. Attendees are encouraged to bring something to work on like writing or drawing, but conversation and record spinning are equally welcome. This is a time to explore contemporary work habits in a group setting.
Held at The Center’s current location at 2032 SE 11th Ave. Portland, Oregon 97214
Systems of a Neighborhood
A tour looking at social and environmental sustainability in the context of the neighborhood in which we go to school, Joel Stien and Nicole Lavelle were our guides.
Things I was thinking about:
This is a class called Art, Society and Sustainability. What does that mean in the context of our daily life? How does art and sustainability interact with our daily lives, perhaps unknowingly? How has society changed and evolved over time on these issues, how have the perspectives changed?
I was supposed to lead a tour so instead I asked my friends to lead a tour, I named it Systems of a Neighborhood.
nicolelavelle:
This is a funny picture of me talking with my hands to a class of Art and Social Practice students while these other people eat their lunches. I am talking about Lawrence Halprin and this structure he made in 1966.
Corbin LaMont is responsible for this photograph and the things happening in it.
In our design schools today, they define rules of design and teach working procedures. But what they cannot teach is a feeling for inventiveness, a dedication to perfection, and how to remain alert to the sudden excitement of a better idea.
Art Directors Club on Herb Lubalin
A manifesto I wrote as part of my thesis class.
termlong:
We should design to help people connect
To use our hands, mind and vision together
To make sense of where we live
The world
And who we are
Because if we didn’t
We’d feel too small
Too insignificant
Lost
Design should trigger experiences
Design is our filter for comprehension
Design is our path…
Happy to see Travis interviewed on Students That Make! I met Travis when ASU was visiting Portland and did a zine collab with Friends of Graphic Design. Luckily we’re both addicted to the internet and have been able to keep in touch. Also his internship at Sterling last summer inspired mine this coming summer. Hope we’ll be in the same city one of these days, until then we have the internet.

antoniopdx asked: Hello Corbin. I was looking at the past samples of the portfolio review and saw that you used a Pina Zangaro Portfolio. I ordered one a few weeks ago but wasn't sure if I should order the pre-scored/pre-hole punched sheets that they offer. Would you mind sharing with me how you chose your paper and if you scored it and hole punched it yourself? By the way your portfolio looks lovely.
Hey! I decided just to punch my own paper because I wanted to be in control of how I laid out my document. I used Moab Rag Bright White 190, you can buy it at Pro Photo Supply. It’s a paper I used for many projects, looks nice printed by inkjet and is a good weight. Not cheap though. I just used the screw holes as guides then marked the first page by those then used the first page as a gude and marked them with a pencil and punched with a regular single hole punch or the larger book binding bunch. My mentee Ali is using the Pina Zangaro as well and is planning on doing hers with a 3-hole punch. Hope that helps and I see you at Be Honest tomorrow! We can chat more about it then and you can see my book in person too.
All systems go! Be Honest tomorrow!

Be Honest is this week! It’s hard to imagine it being bigger and better than last year but I assure you it is going to be. Also you’ll be able to grab your copy of Being Graphic! My spread pictured below. Being Graphic is the culmination of a class I was in during the fall. Our desire was to showcase all our love for all the amazing things coming from the Portland State Graphic Design program.
